Dear Andy Kaufman, I Hate Your Guts!

Legendary performer Andy Kaufman provoked national outrage in 1979 by taunting the women of America to wrestle him live on television. Taking on the aggressive and absurd personality adopted by professional wrestlers, he offered a $1,000 reward to any woman who could pin him, with the additional promise that if beaten, he would shave his head bald; later adding that he would even marry the winning contestant.

Hundreds of fired-up females (and a few males) responded to the call, resulting in a torrent of impassioned challenges, hate mail and love letters from would-be wrestling contenders, and Kaufman kept them all. These fascinating and sometimes bizarre hand-written letters, photographs and illustrations from his challengers are here assembled into an astonishing Rorschach of the late ‘70s liberated female psyche.

This book commemorates the 25th anniversary of Andy Kaufman's death in 1984.

Lynne Margulies, Kaufman's girlfriend and chronicler, provides an introduction. Bob Zmuda, Kaufman’s cohort, writer, and long-time friend, writes the foreword.

Pure Country

Throughout the ‘50s and ‘60s, many of country music’s biggest stars first won over their audiences on the small backwoods stages of rural America’s outdoor music parks. These intimate, $1-a-carload picnic concerts might have been forgotten if it hadn’t been for the documenting eye of music lover Leon Kagarise, whose candid photographs of the musicians and their fans provide the only surviving window into this long-vanished world.

Kagarise captured dozens of classic country and bluegrass artists in their prime, including Johnny Cash and June Carter, George Jones, Dolly Parton, Bill Monroe, Hank Snow, The Stanley Brothers, and many other greats.

Pure Country presents this collection of rare color images for the first time, revealing an archive considered by historian Charles Wolfe to be one of the richest discoveries in the history of American music.

What Kagarise preserved was something extremely rare...live country music
from the ‘50s and ‘60s performed in its most natural setting.

Eye Mind

The trailblazing 13th Floor Elevators released the first "psychedelic" rock album in America, transforming culture throughout the 1960s and beyond. The Elevators followed their own spiritual cosmic agenda — to change society by finding a new path to enlightenment. Their battles with repressive authorities are legendary.

Lead singer Roky Erickson was put away in a maximum security unit for the criminally insane for years. Tommy Hall, their Svengali lyricist, lived in a cave. Guitarist Stacy Sutherland was imprisoned. The drummer was involuntarily subjected to electric shock treatments.

This fascinating biography breaks decades of silence of band members and features dozens of never-before-printed photos. "One of the most exhilarating rock 'n' roll stories ever told." — Julian Cope

Master of the Mysteries: The Life of Manly Palmer Hall

In 1919, a Canadian teenager with a sixth-grade education arrived by train to the wilds of Los Angeles. Within a decade he had transformed himself into a world-renowned luminary and occult scholar. His name was Manly Palmer Hall, author of the landmark encyclopedia The Secret Teachings of All Ages and the 20th century’s most prolific writer and speaker on ancient philosophies, mysticism, and magic.

Hall revealed to thousands how universal wisdom could be found in the myths and symbols of the ancient Western mystery teachings. He amassed the largest occult library west of the Mississippi and founded The Philosophical Research Society in 1934 for the purpose of providing seekers rare access to the world’s wisdom literature. He became a confidante and friend to celebrities and politicians. In 1990, he died—some say he was killed—in what remains an open-ended Hollywood murder mystery.

This dramatic story of Hall’s life and death provides a panorama of twentieth century mysticism and an insider's view into a subculture that continues to have a profound influence on movies, television, music, books, art, and thought.

Author Louis Sahagun is a staff writer at the Los Angeles Times. He contributed to a Times series on Latinos in Southern California that won a Pulitzer Prize. His work ranges from religion and the environment to crime and politics. He lives with his wife and daughter in California.

"An engrossing and informative work. This book vividly illuminates a remarkable individual who was almost larger than life in every sense of the word, and also an era in the history of Los Angeles, a place where people have always felt free to set conventionalism aside and try new spiritual paths."

Frezno

Available Now

Though it once held the promise of the California dream, inspiring the likes of Steinbeck and Saroyan, Fresno is now the butt of a thousand late-night TV jokes; it consistently comes in next to dead last in surveys of cities with a high quality of life.
This central California teenage wasteland—with an ethnically diverse population of Basques, Hispanics, African-Americans, Vietnamese, and Armenians—is home to lowriders, empty buildings, dope drops, and one of the highest violent-crime rates in the country.

It is also the birthplace of photographer Tony Stamolis, who spent six years chronicling his strange hometown. The result: a disturbing, humorous, and poignant insider's view of a post-suburban American badlands.

Advance praise for Frezno

“I love this book. It’s all in here and the heart of it is Tony’s big true eye. He got it . . . the oddness, meanness, beauty and soul of this sad hilarious fractured place. Viva Fresno.”
—Terry Allen

You know that feeling you have when you live in a shitty rural, suburban, or slightly large town in the middle of nowhere and all you want to do is get the fuck out and see some real urban life? Anything that isn't your boring cul-de-sac and empty swimming pool, and you find yourself in isolation, revolting, and making shit while the rest of the world, including those in urban centers who dictate what's "cool" and of the moment find what you are doing the in your little town to be far more interesting, rebellious, and exciting than anything that's being created in the world today and you get a book published, an album produced, or a skate video financed? That is Frezno.

Secret Source, The

The Secret Source goes above and beyond the media phenomenon known as The Secret to reveal the powerful occult doctrines that gave birth to "The Law of Attraction."

The Secret Source traces the seven Hermetic Laws back to ancient Greece and Egypt and shows how they filtered down through various religions and into the mainstream consciousness of the modern world. This book provides the actual texts and fascinating stories behind the "Emerald Tablet," the Kabbalistic treatise known as "The Kybalion," and the prosperity consciousness beliefs of the New Thought movement that have given sustenance to health and wealth-oriented seekers of every generation since the late 19th century.

If you recognized the power behind "The Law of Attraction" but felt ambivalent about The Secret's materially-driven approach, you will appreciate this deeper understanding and examination of the Law's true nature.

“Moondog is one of America’s great originals.”
—Alan Rich, New York Magazine

*WINNER 2008 Independent Publishers Book Award*

Here is one of the most improbable lives of the twentieth century: a blind and homeless man who became the most famous eccentric in New York and who, with enormous diligence, rose to prominence as an internationally respected music presence.

Born Louis Thomas Hardin in 1916, Moondog first made an impression in the late 1940s when he became a mascot of The New York Philharmonic at Carnegie Hall. His unique, melodic compositions were released on the Prestige jazz label. In the late 1960s the Viking-garbed Moondog was a pop music sensation on Columbia Records. Moondog has been noted most recently as an inspiration for the contemporary experimental folk movement.

Moondog's compositional style influenced his former roommate, Philip Glass, whose Preface and performances of Moondog works appear in the book. Moondog's work transcends labels and redefines the distinction between popular and high culture. A CD compilation with a variety of Moondog's compositions is bound into the book.
<!--“You know there is a maverick tradition in American music that is very strong. It’s in Ives, Ruggles, Cage, Partch, Moondog, all of these weird guys. That’s my tradition.”
—Philip Glass

“I have no doubt that in 40 years fathers and sons will still be talking about Moondog.”
—Elvis Costello

“Moondog is one of the finest natural musicians I have ever encountered.”
—Arturo Toscanini

The Source

*WINNER 2008 Independent Publishers Book Award*

See more about The Source Family.

7 x 10 • 280 pages • over 200 original period photographs • CD included • ISBN 978-0-9760822-9-3 •
$24.95

It was 1972, time of the cult-occult-commune explosion. By day, the Source Family served organic cuisine to John Lennon, Julie Christie, Frank Zappa and others at the famed Source restaurant. By night, in a mansion in Hollywood Hills, they explored the cosmos through the channeled wisdom of their charismatic leader, Father Yod. Father was an outlandish figure who had 14 “spiritual wives,” drove a Rolls-Royce, and fronted the rock band Ya Ho Wa 13, now considered by collectors to be one of the most singular psychedelic bands of all time.

The Source Family's true story—kept secret for over 30 years after Father’s spectacular hang-gliding death in 1975—is revealed here by the Family members themselves, with over 200 photographs and a full-length CD of rare Ya Ho Wa 13 live performances and Family recordings.

- - - - - - -

“This story is just so good, so monumental—I just do not want to give away a stitch of it. If you are even minorly interested in messiahs, magic, psychedelic bigamy, divine rock freakouts, nature, or benevolent cults, run don’t walk to get this.”
—Arthur Magazine

“... a book that has become THE talk of the town....”
—Ann Magnuson, Paper Magazine

“While the boho scene has never completely disappeared from L.A., Father Yod and the Source Family are enjoying a new era of notoriety, inspiring indie-folk musicians like Devendra Banhart and mega-producers like Rick Rubin. Aquarian’s book has become a style bible of sorts, with its dreamy images of the comely cult.”—T-Style, The New York Times</em>

“...extraordinary and downright magical...”
—Justin Hampton, Conscious Choice/Whole Life Times

"...the Source Family has the best album covers hands down! Creation at its purest, just being, present as can be, letting the unknown unfold, Raw as the Stooges wasted on Ataraxia, free as the Santa Ana Winds, and rare as an astral encounter with the powers of creation, from Kohoutek to Operetta, the wild saga neverendlessly flows!"
—Devendra Banhart

“Usually, accounts of communal spiritual movements are sensationalistic “exposés of brainwashing cults” or whitewashing “defenses against prejudicial conspiracies.” The Source: The Untold Story of Father Yod, Ya Ho Wa 13 and the Source Family is something else. The participants in this story seem uniformly intelligent, straightforward and better off for their brush with the infinite.”
—Doug Harvey, LA Weekly

"The Source Family contributed a powerful chapter to our communal history, and having Isis Aquarian's empathetic recording of it enriches us all."
—Timothy Miller, Author of America's Alternative Religions

"This is one of the great American underground revolutionary texts—ecstatic, naive, visionary and powerful."
—Thurston Moore and Byron Coley, Arthur Magazine

Guitar Army is the incendiary book that proclaimed “Rock and Roll is a Weapon of Cultural Revolution” in 1972. Author John Sinclair spearheaded the leftist revolutionary vanguard White Panther Party and managed the Detroit rock band MC5, leading them from the ferment of the Detroit riots to the Chicago Democratic Convention of 1968, where the band played minutes before police clubbed antiwar demonstrators.

In October of 1970, the FBI referred to the White Panthers as "potentially the largest and most dangerous of revolutionary organizations in the United States." However, just three years earlier, the group's leaders hosted a "Love-In" on Detroit's Belle Isle, presided over by Sinclair, whom the Detroit News proclaimed "High Priest of the Detroit hippies." In 1970 he was arrested and sentenced to 9 ½ to 10 years for giving an undercover officer two marijuana joints. Sinclair then became the most celebrated political prisoner of the original war on drugs. After 18 months in prison, John Lennon, Allen Ginsberg, Stevie Wonder, Phil Ochs, and others demanded his freedom with a televised benefit concert attended by 15,000 people. Three days later, Sinclair was released.

Guitar Army chronicles these years of revolution through Sinclair’s “street writings” and prison writings, with over 80 photographs, illustrations, concert flyers and comics from the period. This 35th anniversary edition of Guitar Army includes two dozen previously unpublished period photographs, recent writings from John Sinclair, and an introduction from Michael Simmons that leads the reader through the revolutionary times to Sinclair’s life today. Author John Sinclair is the still-charging embodiment of a dazzlingly optimistic time in which change felt necessary and possible.

A bonus CD contains rare recordings of MC5 and other Detroit-area revolutionary bands, Allen Ginsberg, Black Panther Bobby Seale on the White Panthers, and original White Panther Party meetings.

News Junkie

In News Junkie, the cutthroat worlds of journalism, politics, and high finance are laid bare by Jason Leopold, whose addictive tendencies led him from a life of drug abuse and petty crime to become an award-winning investigative journalist who exposed some of the biggest corporate and political scandals in recent American history.

Leopold broke key stories about the California energy crisis and Enron Corporation's infamous phony trading floor as a reporter for the Dow Jones Newswires. While he exposed high-rolling hucksters and double-dealing politicians, Leopold hid the secrets of his own felonious past, terrified that he would be discovered.

When the news junkie closed in on his biggest story-one that implicated a Bush administration member-he found himself pilloried by angry colleagues and the President's press secretary, all attempting to destroy his career.

Jason Leopold introduces us to an unforgettable array of characters, from weepy editors and love-starved politicos to steroid-pumped mobsters who intimidate the author into selling drugs and stolen goods.

In the end, News Junkie shows how a man once fueled by raging fear and self-hatred transforms his life, regenerated by love, sobriety and a new, harmonious career with the independent media.

Sex Machines

Sex Machines: Photographs and Interviews unveils an astonishing American subculture and the homespun inventors and users who propel it. Meet a laid-off tech industry exec who transforms a thrift store pasta maker into a high-powered sexual appliance and a new career; an apocalyptic visionary who builds a sex machine prototype for female survivors of a future without men; and an Idaho cowboy who intends to use his device as a form of Christian-based marriage counseling.

Sex Machines celebrates the spirit of American ingenuity and bold approaches to an ever-changing sexual landscape.

Timothy Archibald’s photographs have appeared in New York Times Magazine, Newsweek, GQ, The New Yorker, and Outside Magazine, and in ad campaigns for Apple Computers, Eastman Kodak, and IKEA. Archibald lives in San Francisco with his wife, Cheri, and two sons, Elijah and Wilson. Sex Machines: Photographs and Interviews is his first book.
