Habeas corpus, we hardly knew ye.

On October 17, President Bush signed the Military Commissions Act of 2006 into law. This act suspends the writ of habeas corpus for alien "unlawful enemy combatants" deemed such by a presidentially appointed tribunal. It also says that the decisions made in the Geneva Conventions cannot be invoked during the, ahem, proceedings.

This somewhat sensational YouTube clip on the "Death of Habeas Corpus" is from Countdown with Keith Olbermann on MSNBC.

Although the law as explicitly stated only applies to non-citizens, the José Padilla case shows that the administration isn't splitting hairs over whether or not "unlawful enemy combatants" have to be alien to invoke these unconstitutional wranglings.

Now is as good a time as ever to think about getting out.
