Tragic tale illustrates how a woman changed her life

Jolene Siana says she grew up with a mother who was physically and emotionally abusive. She didn't know her father.

She experienced the loss of a boyfriend, best friend and both her grandparents in a year. Her way of coping with the traumas was by cutting herself.

"I think the first major cutting episode I had I was definitely suicidal," recalled Siana, a Los Angeles resident who lived in Flushing for a time with relatives. "I cut my wrists. When it became more of a pattern, a habit, I'd cut my legs and nobody would see the scars."
